The Land of ZarahemlaIt is significant that seas are never mentioned when identifying or describing the actual borders of the land of Zarahemla, suggesting the land of Zarahemla may have been an interior land without seashores as borders. Moreover, Mormon indicates the Nephites in the land of Zarahemla “were nearly surrounded by the Lamanites” (Alma 22:29). He indicates that some of these surrounding Lamanites were “on the west of the land of Zarahemla, in the borders by the seashore” (Alma 22:28), suggesting a sea was located to the west of the interior land of Zarahemla, but beyond the land occupied by the Lamanites. There were also “many Lamanites on the east by the seashore, whither the Nephites had driven them” (Alma 22:29), again suggesting a sea was located to the east of the interior land of Zarahemla, but beyond the land held by the Lamanites. Mormon states that the “land of Nephi and the land of Zarahemla were nearly surrounded by water” (Alma 22:32). This description would also apply to the “narrow strip of wilderness” which was the only land area between the land of Nephi and the land of Zarahemla.
Because the land of Zarahemla was directly north of, and adjacent to the “narrow strip of wilderness,” we can assume the seas that are located to the west and east of the land of Zarahemla and the surrounding Lamanite areas are the same sea west and sea east that constitute the borders of the “narrow strip of wilderness.” It is interesting to note that Mormon, when describing the seashore boundaries surrounding the interior land of Zarahemla, includes the phrase “round about on the borders of the seashore, ... which was on the north by the land of Zarahemla” (Alma 22:27). The term “round about” again suggests a circular-shaped landform, such as a cape, along one of the seashores located on the east or on the west, but beyond the interior borders of the land of Zarahemla.
